Note: These FAQs were created in 2014 to address some changes Dyn made in using a D-Link device with Dyn’s Remote Access (DynDNS) Service.

Recently, Dyn has made some changes to the way we verify D-Link devices utilizing our Remote Access (DynDNS) Service.

Q: Why are you making this change?

We are upgrading the D-Link DDNS platform and need to verify all active users of the service.

Q: When are you making this change?

This change will begin Monday, July 14, 2014. As a user of a hostname supplied by Dyn (aka DynDNS) with a D-Link product, you will be required to confirm your account within 90 days of this date.

Q: How have I been notified about these changes?

If you are a D-Link user using a Dyn-supplied hostname, you will have received an email detailing the process on or around the date of Monday, July 14, 2014. If you did not receive an email from us, and feel that you should have, please contact userhelp@dyn.com. Please allow 1-2 days for email notification. Also, please contact D-Link support instead for any hardware/support related inquiries.

Q: How can I continue using my D-Link DDNS hostname(s)?

In order to continue using your D-Link DDNS hostname, you must complete the following verification process:

  1. Go here to re-register your D-Link product. You’ll need to have your product’s serial number and MAC address in order to complete this process. You will need to click on the “Confirm Account” button to re-register. During the process, we will be verifying if you are a D-Link product owner. Only one account can register per device.
  2. Following confirmation of this process, you can continue using your D-Link registered product without interruption. D-Link’s arrangement with Dyn provides you with a hostname and free dynamic DNS for the period specified for the product (generally up to six months). Where certain products include longer periods for the free service, your service will remain free for the extended period specified. You will receive a notice by email prior to the renewal date, if applicable.
  3. If you are unable to confirm your registration and believe this to be in error, you will need to contact D-Link support. Note: this manual verification process may take up to 7 business days to complete.
  4. For non-DDNS enabled D-Link product owners or owners of non-D-Link products, please visit the Dyn website for other offerings from Dyn. The D-Link DDNS service is only for owners of D-Link products with DDNS functionality enabled.

Q: How can I find my device’s serial number?

The Serial Number is located on the product information sticker on the bottom of the box and on the bottom of the product. It is marked with S/N. You can view a diagram of the serial number location here.

Q: I received an error while registering my D-Link device. What should I do?

If you are experiencing any of the following issues, please see the following explanations

  • “Invalid serial number”: This error message indicates that the serial number you have entered is one that we do not recognize as one in our records. We recommend you check the serial number once more to ensure it was entered correctly. However, if you feel that you have entered the serial number correctly from an approved D-Link device, please contact D-Link support. Please note that you may be required to provide proof of purchase and/or a picture of the device’s label. Once verified, we will provide you with the process to activate your account.
Note: This manual verification process may take up to 7 business days to complete.
  • “Serial number already taken”: This error message indicates that the serial number you have entered has already been registered on the D-Link portal. There may be a variety of reasons why this may have happened (duplicate accounts, fraud, etc.), so if you feel you are receiving this error falsely, please contact D-Link support. Please note that you may be required to provide proof of purchase and/or a picture of the device’s label. Once verified, we will provide you with the process to activate your account.
Note: This manual verification process may take up to 7 business days to complete.
  • “Unkown Serial Number or MAC Address”: Serial number is not in database or MAC address was entered wrong.

Serial numbers and activation codes are confidential information Keep your serial numbers and MAC address confidential to prevent others from stealing your license rights from you. Your serial number is your license to use the service. You will be inconvenienced to re-verify your ownership if your number is used by someone else. Keep it confidential!

Q: Am I guaranteed free dynamic DNS for life after I register my D-Link product?

Not necessarily. Registering your D-Link product will allow you to continue using dynamic DNS with your D-Link registered product without interruption for the period specified for the product, which is generally up to six months. However, certain products may allow for longer periods of service.

You will receive an email prior to the end of your free dynamic DNS service.

Q: How long do I have before I need to re-register my D-Link device?

In the interest of providing our D-Link users with ample time to complete the necessary steps (it’s quite easy!), we will be giving all users 90 days (starting Monday, July 14, 2014 until Tuesday, October 14, 2014) to re-register their D-Link devices. However, while we allow up to 90 days for you to re-register your device, we recommend completing the process ASAP to allow for any issues and to avoid any lapse in service.

Q: What happens if I don’t re-register my D-Link device before the deadline?

After October 14, 2014, any D-Link accounts using a hostname supplied by Dyn that have not re-registered their device will have their dynamic DNS service disabled. This means that any dynamic DNS hostnames that were associated with your D-Link account service will be removed.

Q: What if I do not have a valid D-Link device to re-register? Or if I am not a D-Link customer?

We’re sorry to hear, but this free hostname service is for users of valid D-Link products only. If you do not verify/register a valid D-Link product within the 90 day window provided, your account and associated hostname(s) will expire.

With Dyn Remote Access, users have the ability to create up to 30 dynamic DNS hostnames in total. They will also gain access to more than 260 unique hostnames to choose from, access to customer support, and future performance upgrades as we invest in our platforms.

Please note: You will not be able to keep/migrate your current D-Link specific hostname (ex: sample-host.dlinkddns.com) to your Remote Access account.
